With miles of marked trails for all levels — including accessible routes — it’s a haven for walkers and cyclists alike. As keen cyclists ourselves, we (Andy and Emma) are always happy to share our favourite local routes and insider tips — just let us know ahead of your stay, and we’ll point you in the right direction.

Pickering is a fantastic base for cycling in North Yorkshire and Ryedale, with everything from gentle country lanes to more challenging climbs. Dalby Forest is particularly famous for its mountain biking trails, but it also offers a great mix of road, track, and off-road cycling for all abilities. You’ll also find sections of the National Cycle Routes nearby, as well as a range of popular local sportives throughout the year.

A new purpose-built cycle route between Pickering and Malton is now open, offering a safe, off-road connection between the two market towns — we’ve already tried it and can highly recommend it! It’s a brilliant way to link up with the Yorkshire Wolds and beyond.

Pickering Castle

Explore Historic Pickering Castle

Pickering Castle is a remarkable 12th-century motte-and-bailey fortress that has stood the test of time. Its grassy mound, curtain walls, and striking towers remain some of the most iconic features of this royal stronghold. Originally built by William the Conqueror and later strengthened under Henry III to defend against the Scots, the castle saw further additions under Edward II, including the outer entrance, curtain wall, and three towers.

Today, the castle is cared for by English Heritage and makes a wonderful place to explore. Surrounded by sweeping countryside views and peaceful woodland walks, it’s a spot that combines history with natural beauty. Dalby Forest

Just a few miles from Pickering, Dalby Forest is a nature lover’s paradise and part of the stunning Great Yorkshire Forest. With miles of clearly marked walking and cycling routes, there’s something for everyone, from gentle strolls to more challenging rides. Families will enjoy picnic spots, barbecue areas, and a fun-filled outdoor experience, while adventure seekers can tackle the Go Ape Tree Top Adventure Park.

Bicycles are available to hire at the Dalby Forest Visitor Centre, and Big Bear Bikes in Pickering also offer guided rides and bike hire. Whether you’re here for a leisurely day or a full adventure, Dalby Forest is a must-see.
