A Haven for Walkers & Cyclists

Pickering is a great location for amazing cycling and walking routes. We have routes we have tried, which we can recommend to our guests, to suit all abilities. You can hire cycles in Pickering or in Dalby Forest, or bring your own, we have plenty of secure storage. There are a number of local walking groups also who offer guided walks throughout the year. We provide plenty of literature, books and maps in the cottage for guests to plan days out, and walking or cycling routes.

We have Dalby Forest on our doorstep which has miles and miles of marked walking and cycle routes for all abilities and caters for disabled access also. Look for the Great Yorkshire Forest. We have a good selection of maps, walking & cycling books and reference materials in the Cottage, for guests to use.

We also post information and photos about local cycling and walking routes on our Facebook & Instagram pages and have a great local knowledge we can share with you, so please do not hesitate to ask us.

Walkers

Pickering is a Nationally recognised walking location, having been awarded the Walkers are Welcome status as a Town. 

Pickering hosts an annual Walking Festival, which, each year is becoming more and more popular, attracting visitors from far and wide. See our Events listing for Walking Festival dates.

Pickering is ideally situated within the North York Moors National Park, to enjoy an abundance of walking within the North York Moors National Park, Dalby Forest, and Coastal walking around areas such as Whitby, Robinhood’s Bay, Staithes, and Scarborough.

There are a number of long distance walks to enjoy in the area including the Cleveland Way, the famous Coast to Coast which finishes in Robin Hood’s Bay, the Wolds Way & the Tabular Hills Way

Pickering has many footpaths and routes which start in Pickering, so no need to take your car anywhere!

Cyclists

Andy and Emma are keen cyclists and can provide information about routes in the area. Just let us know ahead of your stay.

Dalby Forest is the home to many road, track and off road cycle routes and is famous for its mountain biking in particular.

There are many Cycle Sportives in the region and a number of the National Cycle Routes also, which are clearly marked.

Pickering would be an ideal base for those wishing to explore North Yorkshire and Ryedale by bicycle.
A new purpose built cycle route between Pickering & Malton is due to officially open in 2022. We've already tried it out. It is a great safe, off main roads, cycle route between the two Market Towns, linking Pickering easily with the Wolds and beyond.

We have plenty of secure storage for cycles and kit washing area.

Pickering is a fantastic location from which to base yourself to explore the wonders of the North York Moors National Park, and all that North Yorkshire has to offer, including the dramatic East Coast, see below for some of our suggestions:

Pickering Market Town

Every Monday is market day in Pickering, and the high street is transformed into a bustling, traditional market. Always popular with visitors and residents alike, the market features a large number of stalls selling a wide range of high quality local produce, crafts, food and home essentials. .
 
A thriving town with a vibrant, active local community, the town’s historic market place is packed with excellent independent retail businesses offering everything from bikes and outdoor gear, local produce and crafts, and antiques and gifts.
 
Alongside the independent retailers, you’ll find an abundance of cafés, tearooms, restaurants, pubs and bars, with something to suit every taste and preference.

Pickering Castle

Pickering Castle is a classic 12th century motte-and-bailey castle. The grassy mount and the curtain walls punctuated by tall towers are the most prominent features of this royal fortress. The mound was raised by William the Conqueror, and the stonework added for Henry III as a necessary defence against the Scots. The last additions to the defences of the castle were the outer entrance, curtain wall and three towers, built on the orders of Edward II. This is an English Heritage site. Surrouned by panoramic views, and lovely woodland walks.
 
A special exhibition in the chapel explores the castle's fascinating history.
 

Beck Isle Museum

Perfect for visiting when the sun's shining to enjoy the outdoor farm courtyard and riverside picnic area and just as great to spend time exploring the 27 themed rooms during the occasional Yorkshire rain shower. In a beautiful setting in the centre of Pickering with a lovely outside picnic area and handy for all the Town's cafes.
 
They have demonstrations and talks from expert volunteers.
 

Pickering Steam Railway NYMR

Pickering itself is home to the North York Moors Steam Railway (NYMR), the Station being just a few minutes walk from Eden House Holiday Cottage, Pickering.

Things to do in the local area

Pickering is a beautiful North Yorkshire Market Town with many local attractions and amenities. It is a fantastic location from which to base yourself to explore the wonders of the North York Moors National Park, and all that North Yorkshire has to offer, including the dramatic East Coast. Dalby Forest

Dalby Forest is only a few miles outside Pickering. The Great Yorkshire Forest, with miles of clearly marked cycle and walking routes, visitors centre in the Forest, plenty of places for relaxing, picnicking and barbequing, Lots of fun for the whole family and for those more adventurous ones, there is the Go Ape Tree Top Adventure Park in the Forest. Bicycles can be hired from the Dalby Forest Centre. Big Bear Bikes in Pickering Town (Westgate), also arrange guided rides and bike hire.

The North York Moors

The North York Moors and surrounding villages such as Goathland (famously know for the filming of Heartbeat & Harry Potter), Hutton le Hole (home to the wonderful Ryedale Museum), Thornton le Dale, Rosedale, Helmsley, Grosmont and many more have an abundance of walking, cycling, historic monuments, pretty little villages, shops and galleries to visit. Historic Houses and Gardens

Castle Howard is a must visit – this is a stunning house with wonderfully landscaped gardens with plenty of areas to explore, boating lake, children’s adventure play-ground, cafe, garden centre, walking and cycling. There is also Nunnington Hall & Gardens, Scampston Park Gardens, Burton Agnes Hall,Yorkshire Lavender, Jervaulx Terrace & Abbey, to name but a few. www.castlehoward.co.uk

The Historic City of York

The Historic City of York is approximately 26 miles from Eden House Holiday Cottage, Pickering, with many historic sites, museums, art galleries, gardens, specialist shops and of course the impressive York Minster. York is a stunning City and only 20 minutes from Malton Train Station on the East Coast Main line, or 40 minutes by car (park and ride is plentiful and the easiest option for a day out).

The National Centre for Birds of Prey

The National Centre for Birds of Prey on the Duncombe Park Estate, Helmsley – www.icbp-duncombe.org, is well worth a visit. This is a lovely centre with great staff and plenty for all the family. The bird flying demonstrations are brilliant. Worth a visit.

Sutton Bank and the White Horse

Sutton Bank and the White Horse – Boasting some of the most amazing views in the Region, beautiful scenic walking & cycling and home to the regions Gliding Club. North York Moors Visitor Centre & Café at Car Park. Part of the Cleveland Way

Ryedale

Ryedale has numerous quaint & historic Market Towns, all of which have something unique or special to offer. Malton, just 8 miles from Pickering has become famous for it’s monthly and annual Yorkshire Food Markets, Helmsley, has many lovely specialist shops and cafes and its own Castle. Also home to the stately home Duncombe Park, which is certainly worth a visit. Hutton-le-Hole in it’s stunning Moors setting boasts the wonderful Ryedale Museum, Lastingham with it’s amazing historic Church & crypt, Rosedale nestled in the steep sided valley, fantastic for walking & cycling, and the famous Chimney Bank.

The East Coast

To the East of Pickering is the dramatic East Coast, with its quaint coastal fishing villages and towns to explore; favourites of ours include Whitby, Robin Hood’s Bay, Runswick and Staithes which are classic examples of old English fishing towns and ports, steeped in history, lovely beaches to stroll along, quaint shops and superb Fish & Chips. Part of the Cleveland Way long distance walk takes in a long stretch of this dramatic coastline, and can be done in shorter sections from Staithes to Robin Hood’s Bay or Scarborough & Filey.

Flamingo Land Park and Resort

Only a short drive or bus ride from Pickering. It is perfect for a family day out with its animal park and if you are looking for white knuckle thrills, there is a sensational collection of extreme rides, including the latest roller coaster Hero that puts visitors in a flying position before swooping them around a track, and creating the sensation of zero gravity flight.

Eden Camp Modern History Theme Museum

This award winning WW2 History museum is just a short drive from Pickering, but also benefits from a regular bus service, and is even a nice cycle ride on the back lanes.  Experience the sights, sounds and smells of life on the Home Front and the Front Line, all set in the buildings and grounds of an original World War 2 Prisoner of War Camp.
